Google's "Ask For Me" AI
AI Now Calls Businesses on Customers’ Behalf
Google is testing a new feature called “Ask For Me” that allows AI to call businesses and inquire about pricing and availability. Currently, this experiment is limited to nail salons and auto shops in the U.S. However, users can activate this feature through Google Search Labs and let AI handle calls for services like oil changes or nail appointments.
This tool is built on Google Duplex, an AI system designed to make natural-sounding calls. When calling, the AI clearly states that it’s an automated system contacting the business on behalf of a user. Businesses can opt out of these calls through their Google Business Profile settings or decline when receiving a call.
What This Means for Local Businesses
For businesses, this experiment could bring more qualified leads, as customers using the feature are already looking for specific services. However, it also raises concerns about handling AI-generated inquiries and how frequently businesses will receive these calls. Google has implemented call quotas to prevent excessive contact, but businesses should be prepared to adjust their customer interaction strategies as AI-driven requests become more common.
If widely adopted, this feature could change how customers interact with local businesses, reducing the need for direct calls while ensuring businesses stay responsive to customer needs.
